Reflections on Donington part II
Yelmer came home fourth which meant that, with a complete reverse order of the results of race one, he would start the second heat from 13th. The track was already wet when the cars went on their formation lap but soon after it started to rain cats and dogs. Cars flew all over the place, sometimes with breathtaking spins. Andreas Zuber, Yelmer’s Azerti teammate, went off too, collecting a plastic Michelin publicity board, which then was collected by Yelmer, adding a weird kind of an aerodynamic device to the PSV-car. And strangely enough, it first sat on the left side of the front wing and then strangely changed position to the right hand side. It forced Yelmer to pit to get rid of it but he was lucky that at that stage the safety-car was employed. Having lost a couple of places with his pit stop he then could slot in at the rear of the field. It was the right time for a typical Yelmer show, swiftly moving up the leader board. In the UK his nick name is ‘rain master’, well deserved after a couple of astonishing displays of sheer craftsmanship back in his GB Formule 3 period. And on a soaked Sunday afternoon he showed these skills are still there. The rain was heavy and the situation on the track treacherous. Visibility was almost zero in the spray of any car in front and once again Yelmer got stuck behind the Tottenham Hotspur car of Duncan Tappy. “I could hardly see his car, let alone where the track went. Finally I took the risk, dived into his spray and then suddenly I had a clear sight and was able to pass him”. With a clear track and no spray he was much faster but it all turned wrong. At the bottom of the hill, at the Schwanz curve, there was a kind of a river running over the asphalt and suddenly the Michelin rain tyres lost grip. He slid onto the grass but kept the engine running. With 750 HP, a torque of over 500 Nm and a short clutch travel it was a hell of a job to get the car going again on the uphill grass field but Yelmer managed to get back on the asphalt again. From then on he was the fastest man on track clocking the fastest lap time in the very last lap. A clear second quicker than second fastest man Borja Garcia and almost 4 (!) seconds faster than Tristan Gommendy and Enrico Toccacelo. “All in all I’m really pleased with how things developed over the weekend. With every session we discovered new things and were able to improve the car significantly. And the gap with the leader in the championship doesn’t worry me either. It’s not that big and maybe we can make up in the next races at the Nürburgring”.
