Yelmer tenth in race 2
Scoring a top-10 place in the second race in Bahrein was about the best Yelmer could achieve. At the first corner he was heavily blocked on the inside, while being passed by three cars. After a strong race together with some good passing actions he finished 10th from 24 cars.
After yesterday’s race, in which he finished 12th, Yelmer had to start from the right side of the track, the dirty side. His start was okay but he was forced to stay on the right hand side, approaching the tight right hander at the end of the straight. Being more than a 90° corner the field almost came to a halt. Yelmer was totally blocked while others took the outside and subsequently gained places. The first few laps were rather hectic, with several incidents all over the place. Yelmer cleverly avoided the collisions and after two laps he had claimed back a few places. For a while he stayed put on 11th place but he gained another place in the tenth lap. From lap 17 he reeled in at Christian Vietoris, the German being visibly slower. The best place to overtake is at the end of the main straight presuming you have a nice tow. But Yelmer’s car lacked straight line speed and had to opt for a move in a corner. He took the outside line and almost succeeded but with his car on the dirty side of the track he almost overshot the corner and subsequently had to settle for 10th place. “Regarding the fact that it’s been almost a year since I sat in a GP2 car and the fact that we had only very limited practice facilities it wasn’t all that bad. The speed was there in the second race. Maybe I had a bit too much wing on the car because I couldn’t slipstream on the straight. But therefore my car was so much better in the corners. I had to try it outside with Vietoris and I knew the dirty side of the track would be really slippery. This is a dessert place you know. So be it. It’s been a useful experience regarding next races on the very same circuit”.
